The above character set is a modification of Microsoft's Windows Cyrillic (Code Page 1251) that was designed by Cornell University's Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. It includes Russian accented vowels in place of the non-Russian Cyrillic letters. Fonts based on this character set may be downloaded from http://russian.cornell.edu/fonts/rusfonts.htm.

Notes: Character 160 is a non-breakable space; it is important that it be displayed as space, i.e. look like nothing is there. Character 173 is a non-breakable hyphen; it should look like an ordinary hyphen.

Table B-JavaScript Academic Russian (Windows)
Although in theory, text should be rendered by the browser in exactly the same way regardless of whether it is received as HTML-formatted stream of characters or generated on the fly by a JavaScript function, I found that in some browsers and for some encodings (aka character sets or alphabets) the results are different. Remember to test for the User Defined character set, since Academic Russian is not one of the standard Cyrillic character sets supported by major browsers. E.g., Netscape Navigator versions 4.06 through 4.6 will display nothing but question marks in the table below.
